What You Need to Know Before Changing the Locks on Your Doors

Entry doors are only as secure as the locks installed on them. No matter how solid and strong the door is, it will only be effective in keeping the home safe and secure from intruders if it has a reliable, functional lock.

Even the most durable locks need to be changed periodically. Whether you lost your keys, the lock has worn out after years of use or too many people have access to your keys, you may find yourself urgently needing a new lock.

Here are a few things you need to know before changing the locks on your doors, courtesy of Renewal by Andersen® of San Antonio, a top door and window company in San Antonio.

Two Ways to Change Locks

You can change the lock by replacing the entire lock or by rekeying the lock.

  1. Replacing the lock – Replacing a door lock is more costly than rekeying, but it’s more secure and is a more permanent solution. It involves removing the existing lock and replacing it with a new lock. Door locks can cost between $80 to $300 each, depending on quality.
  2. Rekeying the lock – Rekeying is a cheaper way to change locks. It involves realigning the pins and springs inside the lock so that it will accept a new key. Rekeying kits cost between $15 to $25.

You Can DIY It

While you can hire professional door and window contractors to install your new lock or rekey your existing lock, you can also DIY it to save some money. Pros charge between $80 to $200 to replace locks (cost varies on the complexity of the lock). Locksmiths, on the other hand, charge about $80 to $160 to rekey a lock.

When choosing to DIY, just remember to follow all the instructions that come along with every new door lock or rekeying kit. It’s not that difficult to do if you know how to handle a screwdriver and follow instructions. Otherwise, just hire the pros to get the job done for you.
