Cleaning windows takes time and energy, so you want to make sure you do it right. After all, you wouldn’t want streaks on your beautiful bay window.
Here are tips for cleaning windows safely, thoroughly and efficiently. Do It on a Dry, Cloudy Day
Cleaning your windows under direct sunlight will cause the cleaner to dry on the windows, leaving streaks. That’s why it’s better to clean windows on a cloudy day. If that’s not possible, begin on the shady side of your home.
Don’t Use a Squeegee If You’re Not Sure How They Work
You have to know how to properly use a squeegee or you’ll end up with puddles on the floor. Squeegees are great for larger, picture windows, but only if you know what you’re doing.
Tackle Dust and Dirt First
Before cleaning your windows, remove dust from the window frame using a brush or vacuum. This will prevent dirt from becoming muddy when mixed with a cleaning solution. Detach grimy window screens and wash with hot, sudsy water and a soft brush, then rinse and allow to dry before placing them back.
Use a Microfiber Cloth
Instead of newspaper, use a microfiber cloth to wipe your windows. The ink from wet newspapers can transfer into the molding and trim. Microfiber cloths are very absorbent and washable. They also leave your windows streak-free.
One Room at a Time
Make the job easier by doing it one room at a time. Wipe one side of the window horizontally and the other vertically. This way, you’ll know whether the streaks are on the outside or the inside.
