Glass is the biggest and most important component of any window replacement. Glass is a naturally conductive material, so a single-panel glass window is not the way to go if you want to improve your home’s energy efficiency. Fortunately, all Renewal by Andersen® replacement windows are fitted with High-Performance™ Low-E4® glass. Read on to learn about the features that enable our windows to provide superior energy efficiency and performance.
Dual-Panel Glass, Spacers and Argon Gas Fill
A dual-panel assembly eliminates contact between interior and exterior surfaces and dramatically minimizes heat conduction. Our High-Performance Low-E4 dual glass panels feature non-conductive stainless steel spacers, which helps maintain a consistent distance between each panel. The airspace is then vacuum-sealed, eliminating air molecules that would otherwise allow heat to seep through. This airspace can be filled with argon, a colorless, odorless, non-toxic inert gas that enhances insulation.
The transition from glass to sash (or frame) also requires a tight seal. Renewal by Andersen replacement windows feature a unique two-sealant combination using compressed butyl and specially-formulated silicone, which helps reduce vibrations. As a result, our frames won’t deteriorate, shrink or expand from temperature changes. Hinged window styles such as casement windows have sashes that press against the frame to create a tighter seal than other window styles.
Heat from the sun is a secondary source of unwanted heat. Ultraviolet radiation is another undesirable part of sunlight, as it causes fading on fabrics and furniture. Typical window tints and film can somewhat reduce both, but at the expense of the amount of natural light that’s admitted. Our High-Performance Low-E4 glass doesn’t have these weaknesses. It featuress low-emissivity (Low-E) coatings that selectively block UV rays as well as heat from the sun without sacrificing natural light.
